NON-COMPROMISING, SCIENTIFIC, HIGHEST STANDARDS

The Magoebas Ultra Trail Series will implement a medical approach that firstly doesn't compromise on its participants health, secondly is backed up by scientific research and lastly that is of the highest standards.

We know that exercise such as running has numerous health benefits to those that practice it. There will however always be a flip side to the coin. Endurance sports such as ultra trail running also comes with some health risks to participants. These risks are increased due to the environmental factors and remoteness of endurance trail running events. Therefore we are committed to do out utmost best to ensure the safe participation of each and every participant of the Magoebas Ultra Trail Series.

We are committed to working with the best qualified medical professionals to provide medical coverage during the events of the Magoebas Ultra Trail Series. We only work with professionals that have been trained to deal with medical emergencies in the outdoors and wilderness areas. Further we are also committed to improving the sport in the future by means of allowing research programmes to be conducted at our events. The more knowledge we can obtain about the sport we all love, the better we will be able to host races and ensure safe and fun participation.

We therefore have partnered up with the University  of Pretoria's Physiotherapy Department and PhD Candidate Carel Viljoen to assist us with pre-race medical screening and continued medical research to improve the sport as a whole.

MEDICAL SCREENING PROCESS

1. ONLINE PRE-RACE MEDICAL SCREENING QUESTIONNAIRE

All participants of the Magoebas Ultra Trail Series will be required to complete an online pre-race screening medical questionnaire in the 2 weeks before the event. The purpose of the pre-race screening is to identify participants that are at a high risk of injury or illness should they continue to participate in the event. This will allow the medical team to intervene where applicable to ensure safe participation of all athletes.

The pre-race medical screening questionnaire will be done online and conducted by a team of researchers of the University of Pretoria. Completion of this is compulsory prior to participation in any Magoebas Ultra Trail Series event.

2. PRE-RACE MEDICAL CHECK

The second part of the pre-race medical screening entails a quick physical assessment of each runner participating in any of the Magoebas Ultra Trail races.

Baseline data that will be assessed during this step will be blood pressure, resting heart rate, weight measurement and oxygen saturation.

This step is compulsory for every runner that is participating in one of the following events:

160KM

100KM

50KM

30KM

20KM

3. IN-RACE MEDICAL MONITORING

The last part of the medical screening process entails a quick physical assessment of each runner participating in certain races. This medical assessment will happen at certain points during their race.

Baseline data that was obtained in the pre-race medical check will be used to monitor each participants physiological stress and response to their race. Data that will be used are blood pressure, resting heart rate, weight measurement and oxygen saturation.

These medical checks are compulsory for every runner that is participating in one of the following events:

160KM

100KM

50KM

30KM
